ShortCut For Putting Your Monitor Off

This is something that I have been trying to figure out for some time. I have always wanted to have a shortcut on my taskbar that I could hit in emergency to turn my monitors off. Well, I finally figured it out!

What you need:

  • NirCmd
    • Once you have downloaded and extracted the NirCmd .zip file, you need to put the files inside of the extracted folder somewhere where you will remember the location. I recommend putting it in the core directory of your current user's folder (C:\Users\{YourUser}).

How to make the shortcut:
  • Step One - Right click your desktop and go to "New..."

  • Step Two - Go to "Shortcut"

  • Step Three - Type into the text box the following:

(Replace {nircmd location} with the location of where you put the nircmd.exe file)
  • Step Five - Name your shortcut

  • Step Six - Give it a nifty icon by right clicking the newly created shortcut, going to properties, go to the "Shortcut" tab, cick "Change Icon...," then select the icon you want. I recommend the highlighted one in the following picture:

It looks like this when applied:

  • Step Seven - Drag to your taskbar for easy access!
