Windows 7 Tricks And Shortcuts

Many users use the keyboard for typing text, and the mouse for other actions, and they are not aware of the true abilities button.In this tutorial I will describe a number of very useful shortcuts, which will shorten the daily activities in working with the computer.

1.  Win + M - Minimizes all open windows
2.  Win + Shift + M - cancels the last action, returns all the windows back on the screen
3.  Win + D - shows desktop
4.  Win + up arrow - maximize the current window, that shows it full screen
5.  Win + down arrow - minimize the current window
6.  Win + left arrow - sets the current window to the left half of the screen
7.  Win + right arrow - sets the current window to the right half of the screen

The previous two shortcuts are extremely useful, especially when used one after another.They allow you to share your screen.For example, read the left half of the screen and typing on the right half.

1.  Win + Shift + up arrow - increase page vertical window on the highest value.
2.  Win + Shift + down arrow - page sets the vertical window on the previous value.
3.  Win + Space - shows the desktop - the same function as when you put the mouse pointer in the lower right corner of the screen.Only works if your computer supports Aero theme.
4.  Win + Home - maximize / minimize the current window.
5.  Alt + F4 - well-known shortcut that closes the current window.This shortcut is one of the most commonly used.
6.  Alt + Tab - returns the window that was previously active.If you hold down the ALT key and repeatedly pressing TAB, you can move cyclically through all open windows.
7.  ALR + Esc - alternately shows every open window.
8.  Win + Tab - 3D view of open windows. If you hold down Alt, and repeatedly pressing Tab, you can move cyclically through all open windows, with a very nice 3D animation.Only works if your computer supports Aero theme.
9.  Ctrl + Win + Tab - similar to the previous shortcut, except that now the windows remain in the 3D view until the arrow keys on the keyboard (or turning the wheel on the mouse) does not position the desired window. 

Shortcuts for taskbar

1.  Win + a number - opens the appropriate application that is attached (pin, - the program whose icon is always located on the taskbar) on the taskbar with that serial number. For example, if I wanted to run Internet Explorer, I would press Win +2.
2.  Ctrl + mouse click to pin - cyclical move through the open windows of the program.
3.  Shift + click on pinned program - run a new instance of the program.
4.  Ctrl + Shift + click on pinned program - run a new instance of the program, but with administrator permissions.
5.  Shift + Right-click on pinned program - shows the control window (Minimize, close, etc ...).
6.  Win + T - cycle moves through the applications in the taskbar, showing a small picture of the open.
7.  Win + Shift + T - the same action as the previous shortcut, but in the opposite order.

General shortcuts

1.  Win + P - Displays options that allow the picture on two monitors.Very useful shortcut that gives you a choice of how the image is displayed on your monitor connected to another monitor, projector or TV.
2.  Win + D - shows the active Gagdet on the desktop.
3.  Win + L - locks the account, the same as "Switch User" option, which means that all your programs will remain open, and the other user can access your account.
4.  Win + + - you should press the plus button (+) - (zoom) display screen.
5.  Win + - - you should press the button minus (-) - -zoom display screen.
6.  Win + = - you should press the button equal (=) - powered magnifying glass, an application that lets you to see closer or further away display screen. 

Shortcuts for Windows Explorer

1.  Alt + P - shows / hides the panel to display the marked file, which will appear on the right side of an open window.
2.  Alt + up arrow - moves to a level above the current folder, ie the parent folder.
3.  Alt + arrow left / right - returns to the previous folder, or go to the next. It has the same function as a blue arrow on the bottom of images that are left of the path and folder name (Figure below).

Stickers for Desktop (Sticky Notes)
It is not known exactly when the fridge started to be used as a bulletin board.But, as with sites on the Internet, its popularity has grown due to high traffic and is therefore thought of a clever mind that the flow (circulation) can be used for information and intelligence purposes.The first tape attaches the piece of paper, and followed the familiar yellow label (Post-its).

The basic idea of the piece of paper was saved, ie. convey a short message to someone.It comes default with Windows 7, you find it so easy in the start menu (Start menu).

Click left mouse button on the Start button, point to All Programs, and you will quickly see a folder (folder) highlighted item 1, under the name Accessories. Click on it, and then on Sticky Notes, at point 2.With the same success by starting a program for notes, if the start menu in the box that says Search programs and files, type "Sticky Notes" and press ENTER.


First Sticky Note will appear in the default yellow edition. If you considered this color not comfortable, click inside the yellow area of the right mouse button and you will get a pop-up menu where you can choose one of five non-yellow color :) . .Left mouse button activate the desired color.


Sticky Notes consists of a header and text. The header (this is seen only in active sticky notes, if they have more than one) are two star symbols buttons.By clicking the plus sign (+, in addition to point 1 on the picture above) add the new notes on your desktop. In addition to point 2, the header is a symbol of X which notes removed from the desktop. Before that Windows 7 will ask Are you sure you want to delete this note?Answer it by clicking the Yes button, if you delete the notes were intended.To avoid recurrence of this issue, click the check box (in point 3) in addition to text "Do not display this message again (do not show this message again).


Although it seems naive, because there are no menus, Sticky Notes has a (hidden) capabilities.You can create different lists or stylize text. Select the desired text and then pressing the key combination on the keyboard activate some of these options:

1st Bold: CTRL+B Highlighted text (bold): CTRL + B
2nd Striketrough: CTRL+T Linethrough marked text : CTRL + T
3rd Italics: CTRL+I Italic text : CTRL + I
4th Decrease text size: CTRL+SHIFT+< Reduces the marked text
5th Decrease text size: CTRL+SHIFT+> Marked increase text
6th Bulleted list: CTRL+SHIFT+L - List the items (Bulleted list): CTRL + SHIFT + L (press all three keys at once)
7th Numbered list: CTRL + SHIFT + L (2x press L, while the other two hold)
8th ABC list (a,b,c, etc): CTRL+SHIFT+L (3x press L, while the other two hold)
9th Roman numeral list – i,ii, etc.): CTRL+SHIFT+L (5x press L)
10th Left align: CTRL+L Left aligned
11th Right align: CTRL+R - Right alignment of text
12th Centered align: CTRL+E
13th Delete, no confirmation : CTR+D
14th Undo CTRL+Z Return to step back
15th Redo CTRL+Y Repeat the previous step

For advanced users (and for the fearless beginner)

Sticky Notes supports Rich Text Format (for beginners: the type of style editing text), and it is possible to copy the contents of a text adapted from HTML pages, Word or some similar program for working with text, and paste the content (paste) in a message.

In the end, I'm going to say that Sticky Notes automatically saves every message as soon as the mouse leave the message field and click anywhere outside. The messages are saved in the user folder, which is located at C: \ Users \ user \ AppData \ Roaming \ Microsoft \ Sticky Notes ". All your messages are packed into a binary file called StickyNotes.snt. How to enable Video Wallpaper or DreamScene in Windows 7

Windows DreamScene was a utility available for Vista Ultimate that allowed users to set video as desktop wallpaper. It was dropped in Windows 7, but we’ll take a look at how to play DreamScenes in all versions of Windows 7 or Vista.

Downloading DreamScenes

First, you’ll need to find some DreamScenes to download. We’ve found some nice ones at both DreamScene.org and DeviantArt. You can find those download links at the end of the article. They’ll come as compressed files, so you’ll need to extract them after downloading.

Windows 7 DreamScene Activator

If you are running Windows 7 you can use Windows 7 DreamScene Activator. This free portable utility enables DreamScene in both 32 & 64 bit versions of Windows 7. Users can then set either MPG or WMV files as desktop wallpaper.

Download and extract the Windows 7 DreamScene Activator (link below). Once extracted, you’ll need to run the application as administrator. Right-click on the .exe and select Run as administrator.

Click on Enable DreamScene. This will also restart Windows Explorer if it is open.

To play your DreamScene, browse for the file in Windows Explorer, right-click the file and select Set as Desktop Background.

Enjoy your new Windows 7 DreamScene.

 

Although it says it is for Windows 7 only, we were able to get it to work with no problems on Vista Home Premium x32 as well.

 

You can Pause the DreamScene at anytime by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting Pause DreamScene.

 

When you are ready for a change, click Disable DreamScene and switch back to your previous wallpaper.

Using VLC Media Player

Users of all versions of Windows 7 & Vista can enable a DreamScene using VLC. Recently, we showed you how to set a video as your desktop wallpaper in VLC.  Since DreamScenes are in MPEG or WMV format, we will use the same tactic to display them as desktop wallpaper. We’ll just need to make a few additional tweaks to the VLC settings.

You’ll need to download and install VLC media player if you don’t already have it. You can find the download link below. Next, select Tools > Preferences from the Menu.

Select the Video button on the left and then choose DirectX video output from the Output dropdown list.

Next, select All under Show Settings at the lower left, then select the Video button on the left pane. Uncheck Show media title on video. This will prevent VLC from constantly showing the title of the video on the screen each time the video loops. Click Save and the restart VLC.

 

Now we will add the video to our playlist and set it to continuously loop. Select View > Playlist from the Menu.

Select the Add file button from the bottom of the Playlist window and select Add file.

 

Browse for your file and click Open.

 

Click the Loop button at the bottom so the video plays in a continuous loop.

 

Now, we’re ready to play the video. After the video starts playing, select Video > DirectX Wallpaper from the Menu, then minimize VLC.

 

If you’re using Aero Themes, you may get a pop-up warning and Windows will switch automatically to a basic theme.

 

If looping one video gets to be a little repetitive, you can add multiple videos to your playlist in VLC and loop the entire playlist. Just make sure you toggle the Loop button on the playlist window to Loop All.

Now you’ve got a nice DreamScene playing on your desktop. Another cool trick you can do with VLC is take snapshots of favorite movie scenes and set them as backgrounds.

When you’re ready to go back to your old wallpaper, maximize VLC, select Video and click DirectX Wallpaper again to turn it off the video background. Occasionally we were left with a black screen and had to manually change our wallpaper back to normal even after turning off the DirectX Wallpaper.

Note: Keep in mind that using the VLC method takes up a lot of resources so if you try to run it on older hardware, or say a netbook, you’re not going to get good results. We also tried to use the VLC method in XP, but couldn’t get it to work. If you have leave a comment and let us know.

While the DreamScene feature never really caught on in Vista, we find them to be a cool way to pump a little life into your desktop on any version of Vista or Windows 7.

Basic Computer Security (Windows 7)

Basic Security Applications

You are going to want a few applications to help you out along the way. First off, you will need two anti-malware programs. This is to ensure that if one misses something, you have a second one to make sure. I personally use Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM). Update these as often as they need to be. Run both of these every single day. Once a week minimum, but daily is far more advantageous. 

If you use torrent applications, you will need PeerBlock. PeerBlock basically blocks your peers, especially RIAA, the govt, and other unsavory sorts from tracking who you are and what you're downloading. If you don't use PeerBlock, I can almost guarantee you getting caught at some point.

For web browsing, you should use Mozilla Firefox. Many of them will probably recommend Google Chrome, but Google has been known to extensively spy on users, and keep their data indefinitely. If you want to use Google Chrome for your online banking etc., use in Incognito mode. And for extensions, some good ones would be AdBlock Plus to block ads from displaying, FlashBlock to keep Flash objects from playing and potentially infecting you, HTTPS Everywhere to force websites to use SSL which encrypts your traffic so packet sniffers can't steal your credentials, and NoScript which blocks JavaScript and Java from automatically running which is used to infect many people without their knowledge. These addons, combined with Firefox, will help protect you.


Good Password Practices

It may come as a shock, but many online accounts are compromised simply by brute-force attacks. This is where a program simply forces many possible combination of letters, numbers, and symbols at a website until one of them is the correct password, which unlocks the account. It is relatively easy to stop this, for the most part, however. But remember, nothing is 100%. The best way to protect your online accounts is to use a password manager. I am a huge fan of LastPass because of it's convenience. It may not be the most secure, but it works for my purpose. You will want to go to every account you have online and change the password to something secure (LastPass has a tool where it will generate a random string of numbers, letters, and symbols of any length - use at least 20 characters. 40 is better.). Have LastPass save all of your login credentials and secure your LastPass account with a password you will remember, but is equally difficult to guess. I use Passphra.se for all the passwords I have to remember. Here is a great explanation for why it works so well. 

I only have to remember four passwords, total. One to log in to my computer. One for the wifi. One for LastPass. And one for my school accounts (computer, grade checks online, etc.) All of these come from Passphra.se and I tack on a couple easy to remember numbers at the end and make the first letter a capital (not for security, it's just my habit).


Is there anything else?

Make sure your firewall is on.
Run your anti-malware programs every day.
Never give out a password for any reason.
Most of all, use common sense. If you get an email claiming you just won a $20 million Nigerian lottery, it's probably a fake.

Function Keys in command prompt:


F1: Pastes the last executed command (character by character)
F2: Pastes the last executed command (up to the entered character)
F3: Pastes the last executed command
F4: Deletes current prompt text up to the entered character
F5: Pastes recently executed commands (does not cycle)
F6: Pastes ^Z to the prompt
F7: Displays a selectable list of previously executed commands
F8: Pastes recently executed commands (cycles)
F9: Asks for the number of the command from the F7 list to paste
