Windows 7 Optimization

Windows 7 comes as a significant performance improvement over its predecessor, Windows Vista. But if you want to get the very best performance possible, you should make a few system tweaks to eliminate resource-hogging programs and features. In this guide, I'll show you a few good ways to boost your PC's performance without upgrading your hardware.

Speed Up a Fresh Windows 7 Upgrade


When you reach the first, fresh desktop after completing a successful Windows 7 installation, you might be stunned to find your components in perfect working order. For the most part Windows 7 is quite good about setting up drivers for networking, video, input devices, and other elements--good, that is, but not great.
To maximize your PC's performance, first hunt down and install Windows 7 drivers for all of the critical components attached to your system. Motherboard drivers are the most important consideration, especially if your system's video and sound are integrated onto the system board. If those components aren't integrated in your PC, add drivers for your video card and sound card to the list, followed by your input devices and any additional parts you've attached to your system in some capacity (including, but not limited to, a Wi-Fi card, any PCI-based devices, and printers). If you're not sure what components you have, grab the free program DriverMax and use it to scan your system for components and for potential driver updates.

Can't find Windows 7 drivers for a product? Try using Windows Vista drivers instead. If you run into trouble, try right-clicking on the executable file and left-clicking Troubleshoot Compatibility. Run through the wizard and select the option that refers to the program's running fine in an earlier version of Windows but not in Windows 7. Select Windows Vista as the subsequent operating system, click Next through the offered prompts, and then run the installation executable again.

Finally, though it might sound odd, don't use the Windows Updater to install drivers for your machine--Microsoft is notorious for releasing old and/or incompatible drivers through this service.


Optimize Your Storage


If you installed Windows 7 as an upgrade from Windows Vista, you'll find a folder labeled C:\Windows.old. This folder, as you might expect, holds the full contents of your old Windows Vista system. It's huge, and it's a waste of space. Scroll through the folders for any files that you want to save in your new Windows 7 OS, and then delete the entire folder from your drive. Space saved. Can also try 'Disk Clean Up', located under System Tools in your Accessories folder under Programs at your start button.

Optimizing Your Virtual RAM


Virtual memory is basically space on your hard drive reserved to work as RAM. You may be asking yourself- why do people ever pay money to buy ram then? Well the answer is simple, because its MUCH slower, still, if you have a small amount of RAM, this can help. If you have a second hard-drive with no OS on it, it will REALLY help, because the virtual memory will be as fast as REAL RAM. To do this, open Control Panel and choose System. From there, click Advanced System Settings. Select the Advanced tab, and then click the Settings button under the Performance category. On the new window that pops up, choose the Advanced tab. Finally, click Change. Uncheck the box labeled Automatically manage paging file size for all drives. Now if you don't have a spare hard-drive, select C: - If your on 32 bit, enter 4000 for both boxes and click set. If your on 64 bit, enter anywhere from 4000 - 15000 (Anything higher is really pointless). If you DO have a spare drive select C: from the No paging file option. Next, select a different hard drive and choose System managed size. Click OK and restart your computer.

Pushing Your Performance


Editing the Registry can be a perilous process. Make sure that you're editing only the menu delay values, else you might find yourself in a heap of trouble. To create a faster Windows 7 experience, start by modifying the amount of time that mouse-over boxes and clicked menus take to appear. Click on the Windows Start button and type regedit into the 'Search programs and files' box. Welcome to the Windows 7 Registry--don't touch or modify anything without good reason. Left-click on the expandable arrow next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Expand the Control Panel folder, and then click directly on Desktop in the hierarchy. In the right pane, look for and double-click MenuShowDelay. Change the value from 400 to any lesser number that's 1 or greater; this figure represents the milliseconds of delay between your click and a menu's display. Restart the computer to apply the changes immediately, or continue to the next tweak.

See the folder labeled Mouse (below Desktop)? Click that, and then search for and select the MouseHoverTime Registry key. Just as before, change this value to any lesser number that's 1 or greater. Close the Registry Editor, restart the computer, and you'll have faster mouseovers.

If you're willing to sacrifice looks for speed, you can modify the visual settings of the Windows 7 interface to emphasize performance over presentation. Go back to the System section of Control Panel and click on Advanced System Settings again. On the System Properties window that appears, choose the Advanced tab and then click on the Settings box underneath the Performance category. The Performance Options window will pop up. There, you'll see a list of checked boxes that correspond to all of the window dressing in the operating system.

If you don't mind transforming your OS into a clone of Windows 2000, click the button that tells Windows to adjust its visual settings for best performance. It's a harsh step to take, though--if you'd prefer a piecemeal approach, uncheck only the boxes that relate to Windows Aero (such as Aero peek and transparent glass). You'll retain a semblance of a pretty desktop while still improving performance a teeny bit.


Conserve Resources


Once you've installed a fair amount of programs on your PC--your "core base" of apps, as it were--you'll want to check that your system doesn't have any unwanted applications running in the background that could otherwise impede the machine's general performance. These programs launch themselves during the operating system's startup process, and are often designed to help you load their corresponding applications faster. The problem is that they run every time, regardless of whether you intend to use the application during a given session.

Click Start and type msconfig into the 'Search programs and files' field. Press Enter. In the System Configuration window that appears, select the Startup tab. Move your mouse between the headers of the Manufacturer and Command columns, and shrink the Manufacturer column down; the Command column is the one you care about.

A number of the startup applications that launch on your machine sit in the background, consuming resources. For example, take iTunes: If you've installed this application, you'll find iTunes and QuickTime listings in the Startup tab. Both iTunesHelper.exe and QTTask.exe are unnecessary additions to your system--the former launches when you start iTunes anyway, and the latter places a QuickTime icon in the corner of your system for easy program launching. Uncheck them both.

As for the other programs on your list, try running a quick Web search of each application's executable-file name to find out if the program is worth keeping or removing. Once you've checked the programs you want to launch at startup and unchecked the programs you don't, click OK.

In addition to startup programs, you'll find services on your PC; Microsoft recommends trimming both to squeeze the most performance out of your system. For the services, click Start, type services.msc into the search field, and press Enter. Up pops the Services window, a list of options and executables that's even more confusing than the startup window.

You can't identify which services to turn off (and which to leave on) without taking a close look at how each one affects your system's overall performance. Thankfully, someone has been doing that exact task since Windows XP: Charles Sparks, under the alias Black Viper, has listed every single permutation of Windows 7's services across all of its versions, along with a "safe" and "tweaked" list of which services you should modify and how you should set their parameters.

To follow his advice, just double-click on any listed service. You need concern yourself only with the 'Startup type' listing in the screen that appears next. By switching among the Automatic, Manual, and Disabled modes, depending on his recommendations, you'll be able to control exactly how services launch--if at all--during the Windows startup process and during your general use of the operating system. Every little bit helps.



Maintain Top Performance



If you want to keep your system fast, be sure to clear out your C:\Windows\Temp folder on occasion. Do it as soon as you boot into the OS, or even through Safe Mode, to ensure that you wipe every last unused file from your drive. In the same vein, don't use Windows 7's uninstall function or a program's default uninstall executable to remove the application from your drive. Instead, use the free Revo Uninstaller utility; this awesome application removes programs using their default uninstall routines, but it also goes one step further by scanning your system and Registry to clean away any and all traces of the program from your hard drive.

Tweaking the operating system to increase its performance helps you achieve better results with the equipment you have, but the surest way to boost your PC's prowess is to upgrade the hardware. Once you've done that, remember to keep your system free from clutter--what good is a performance boost on a messy system anyhow?

Programs & Adware


The first step in making your PC faster is removing any unused or unwanted programs or adware. A lot of you are already doing this, but you’d be surprised at how many people don’t.
In Windows 7, go to the Start menu, then Control Panel, then click Uninstall A Program.
In Windows Vista, click the Start button, then Control Panel, then Programs, and then Programs and Features.
In Windows XP, click the Start Button, then Control Panel, then click Add/Remove Programs.


Temporary Files


Delete old temporary files, I recommend CCleaner. If you’re not already using it, you can download it from from your favourite torrent site.


Defragmenting


For the purpose of keeping the tutorial clean I wont go into too much detail about what defragmenting is, but basically it keeps the files that are stored on your hard disk in order, so they can be accessed more quickly. If you don’t use an SSD, you should be doing this frequently. I’d recommend O&O Defrag Pro, you can get it from your favourite torrent site, or you can buy it from the developers website  Here
Note: I recommend that you don’t have O&O or any other defrag tool starting when Windows start-up. When you run O&O Defrag for the first time, you will get the option to schedule scans but just use it manually every now and then.


Drivers & Update


Keeping your drivers up to date can also give minor performance increases, as well as bug fixes, stability improvements and new features. An updated graphics card driver for example may deliver a few more FPS in certain games and benchmarks.
It’s better if you can download the latest drivers from manufacturers website yourself, you can use THIS to find out what hardware you have. Otherwise, you can use a tool such as Driver Genius or Driver Reviver to download the latest drivers for you. I personally recommend Driver Genius, it works great, but I’ve read good things about Driver Reviver. You can get Driver Genius or Driver Reviver from thepiratebay.

 


How To Make Your PC Faster – Tips & Tweaks


So now that we’ve covered the first part on how to make your PC faster, we’ll move on to the second part, tips and tricks.


Change The Power Plan

The Power settings in Win7 aren’t automatically set for maximum performance. By default the power plan is set for balanced performance and energy consumption, so you might not be geting the optimal performance from Windows. To change the power plan to High Performance Mode, double click Power Options in the Control panel, click the down arrow that shows Additional Plans. Now just activate the High Performance plan and that’s it. Go for the advanced power settings, go to the Hard Disk, then to ‘Turn off hard disk after..’ and set it to Never. This enables the GC to do its job while logged off.


How To Make Your PC Faster With Write-Caching


With write-caching enabled, the storage device determines whether using the cache will save time completing writes. If it will, the HDD signals to the computer that the data has been stored even though it may not actually be in the storage device yet. It improves the throughput of storage operations, which are usually a bottleneck for overall system performance.
To enable write caching, go to the Start menu, open the Control Panel, then System and Security, then Device Manager, expand Disk drives, Double click on the listed HDD that you want to enable write caching for. Click on the Polices tab. By default, “Enable write caching on the device” is checked under the Write-caching policy section. If not, then check it, then check the “Turn off Windows write-cache buffer flushing on the device” box, Click OK, then click on Yes to restart the computer to apply.

WARNING: Turning off “Windows Write-cache Buffer Flushing on the Device” runs the risk of data loss if there’s a power failure, so make sure you always shut the PC down properly. I’ve personally lost power several times with write caching enable and never had any issue, but it’s something you might want to take into consideration.


Disable Indexing


Indexing creates and maintains a database of file attributes, which causes multiple small writes when creating, deleting or modifying files.
Go to the Start menu, right-click Computer, click Manage, go to Services and Applications, then Services, right-click Windows Search, select Properties, change Startup type to Disabled, click Stop, then Apply.

We also need to stop Windows indexing the HDD.
Go to Start menu, then Computer, Right click on the HDD, select Properties, uncheck Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties and Click OK
Once you’ve unchecked indexing, follow the on-screen instructions, you might have to skip some files you do not have access to.



Disable The Page File


The page file is used by Windows to hold temporary data which is swapped in and out of physical memory in order to provide a larger virtual memory set. Since the HDD/SSD is a lot slower than physical memory, it obviously causes a slow-down. If you have 4GB of RAM or more, you can disable paging by going to the Start menu, right-click Computer, select Properties, then Advanced System Settings, then Settings (Performance), now go to the advanced Tab, click Change, Uncheck Automatically manage, select No paging file, click Set, then OK/Apply. Restart your computer.
Note: If you run out of memory the program you’re using will crash, this is why I say 4GB of RAM or more. It really depends on what you use your PC for though, I’ve disabled the page file on a Win7 machine with 2GB RAM and it’s had no issues at all, even with a lot of things open, like Firefox and Chrome with multiple YouTube tabs playing in each, several Explorer windows, disk defragmenter, Media Player playing, as well several other apps running, simultaneously with no issues at all. Win7 seems to handle memory very well.
If you want to play it safer, you can set a custom size of 200MB min and max.



Enable TRIM (SSDs only)


TRIM is a way to speed up SSD access by performing important housekeeping tasks in the background or on file deletes, rather than leaving it until the system is writing data to the drive
To enable TRIM, go to the Start menu, type cmd in the search-box and press enter. In the Command Prompt, type: fsutil behavior set disabledeletenotify 0
To disable TRIM, go to the Command Prompt and type: fsutil behavior set disabledeletenotify 1
To find out if TRIM is working, go to the Command Prompt and type: fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify
DisableDeleteNotify = 1 means TRIM commands are disabled)
DisableDeleteNotify = 0 means TRIM commands are enabled)

RAM Disk


RAMDisk is a program that takes a portion of your system memory and uses it as a disk drive. What is the benefit? SPEED! An additional feature of a RAMDisk is that it will never wear out. You can access it at maximum bandwidth 24/7 without fear of mechanical failure, or fragmentation (a RAMDisk can become fragmented just like any other disk, but it does not take a performance hit like a physical disk does when it becomes fragmented).

Services & Start-Up

It is an unnecessary waste of system resources if you have unneeded programs and services starting up when Windows starts. To disable them, type services.msc in the search box of the Start menu and press Enter
Stop any unnecessary programs starting up by right-clicking them, going to Properties then choosing the Startup type. If you’re not going to be using the service at all, you can set the start-up type as Disabled, otherwise, choose Manual so they can be started as needed. If you’re unsure what any of them are, you can Google the name of the service.

After you’ve disable those services, you can check the Hide All Microsoft Services and disable anything you don’t need. If you’re unsure what any of them are, you can Google their name.


How to make your PC faster – Disable The Aero Theme


Right-click your Desktop and select Personalize, then click the Window Color Tab.
Uncheck the Box called Enable Transparency and then click on Open classic appearance properties for more color options.
A window will then open up. Apply a Standard theme from it.

Disable Unneeded Visual Effects


For this, open the Start  menu, right-click on Computer and select Properties from the right click menu.
Click Advanced System Settings from the left-hand pane to open the System Properties window.
Select the Advanced tab. Then Under Performance, click Settings and then select Custom.
Now untick all the options and select only the last four options, click Apply, then log off and back on.

How to make your PC faster – Browsers


Since the internet browser is one of the most frequently used programs on a PC nowadays, you should choose one that’s right for you, but which one?
Some of the most well-known and best browser are FireFox, Chrome, Safari, Opera and Internet Explorer, I’d personally recommend Chrome or FireFox. There’s not too much difference between the two, Chrome is slightly faster out-of-the-box,
